If your water had been tested and found to be present for coliform bacteria, you need to take action. To prevent a potential problem from deteriorating further, you need to identify the possible source(s) of contamination and take corrective steps to purify your water.
Plumbing contamination from the pipes and/or contamination from the existing water treatment system can cause bacteria to be present. If your water tests absent for coliform bacteria after shock disinfecting, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Private Well Regulations recommend at least two consecutive samples be collected and found absent for coliform bacteria before the supply may be considered satisfactory.. The samples must be collected at least 24 hours apart, and the well may not be disinfected between samples.
